Online courses A1.1/A1.2 March 2021
The Department German as a Foreign Language in the Center for Key Skills offers two online German courses for levels A1.1 and A1.2 during the semester break. The courses primarily target exchange students and students of master programs in English. Further target groups are foreign PhD students or guest scientist as well as staff if there are still free places in the course.
The courses offer an early introduction to the German language. Lessons take place over four weeks from Monday to Thursday in the morning. The courses are from the 1 to 25 March 2021and include 18 online teaching hours per week plus homework/assignments.
The courses take place via video conference using Zoom or BigBlueButton as well as self-study time via the university’s internal learning platform OLAT.
5 ETCS credit points can be awarded with successful participation.
The participants' language level higher than A1.1 will be established by a placement test on our website as part of the enrolment process. Beginners of the German language are automatically assigned to the A1.1 course.
The course will work with the Spektrum textbook series from Schubert-Verlag (see Download section for overview)
The registration portal is open from 1 to 14 February 2021.
The number of participants is limited.
The European University of the Seas (SEA-EU)
Kiel University (CAU) is a partner of the "European University of the Seas" alliance (SEA-EU), which is one of the 41 European Universities alliances co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union. Under the leadership of the University of Cádiz (Spain), and together with the partner universities of Western Brittany (Brest, France), Gdańsk (Poland), Split (Croatia) and Malta, Kiel University plans to enhance the quality of education across all faculties and at all six locations. SEA-EU aims to strengthen links between education, research and innovation, as well as to foster social engagement and environmental responsibility.
This ambitious initiative echoes the vision of European Commission to 'dare to dream'.
The Department of German as a Foreign Language in the Center for Key Skills is actively involved in the SEA-EU initiative. Svenja Schilling is Kiel University's representative for fostering multilingual competence, one focus of SEA-EU which is addressed in the organisational committee 'Indentity' (Identity Subcommittee). Stina Grill supports the Initiative as student assistant. They both contributed, among other things, to a tandem language learning programme and intensive online language courses in the languages native to the six universities of the alliance for students and staff at Kiel University.

A shelf for DaF-Learners in the Zentralbibliothek
Dear Participants,
We would like to inform you that from now on, you will find a shelf in the Zentralbibliothek that is designed for the needs of DaF-Learners.
You will find this shelf with the identifier DaF PAE 657. There are several Grammar books as well as some course books that will help you with your studies.
If you have any suggestions for books that are not in this shelf yet, please do not hesitate to tell us.
Corona pandemic: bridging aid for students in financial emergency situations
The Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) is giving support to students in need.
STUDENTS IN FINANCIAL NEED (due to the corona pandemia) may apply for financial aid("Bridging Aid"). This may be important for students, who have lost their job, due to the situation caused by corona.

If you find yourself in a critical financial situation (due to corona), you should read the information carefully and then decide if you should file an application for support.
The application period starts as of Tuesday, 16th of June 2020. Please do not expect an immediate response, as the applications are not handled straight away. However, an early application is advisable, especially if you are in need already.
The Studentenwerk has declared, that applying for financial aid has no negative consequences on decisions by the immigration office relating to visa procedures.
