Study support General Overview

General Overview

As in past semesters the Department German as a Foreign Language offers complimentary German classes for the following target groups to give support in your study or research programme as well as in everyday situations at Kiel University or anywhere else in Germany.

  • Students of Master Programmes held in English/German
  • Students who are enroled for a study programme without degree at Kiel University (e.g. scholarship holders (ERASMUS, DAAD, city of Kiel) or the so-called “free-movers” studying only for one or two semesters)

If classes are not fully booked by the target groups named above, we offer the available places for the following target groups:

  • Visiting scientists and Post docs and PhD students
  • Academic staff and employees at Kiel University or associated institutes

Courses are being offered at different levels. Students will be assigned to classes according to their language needs and proficiency based on the results achieved via an online placement test. There are classes available from beginner level (GER A1/A2 level), through intermediate level (GER B1/B2 level) to advanced level (GER C1/C2 level).

A 12-weeks period comprises a total of 72 teaching units. Most classes meet on 2 evenings every week. Each class meeting contains 3 teaching units. Classes missed due to national holidays or else will be caught up on at the end of the course.

We also offer compact courses for the following levels: A1, A2, B1 and B2  (from summer semester 2021). In these courses, participants can complete not just one, but two entire course levels, since, for example in the A1 compact course, levels A 1.1 and A 1.2 are taught in one semester. The compact courses take place three evenings a week.

For all courses there is only a limited number of places available.

Certificates/ ECTS credit points:

5 ECTS credit points are awarded to all attendants who do not exceed 3 times of absence and comply with the obligatory home work assignments and tests. All students enrolled at Kiel University need to register expected ECTS credit points as an exam via the CAU Portal (POS HISinOne).

Study support Course information

Course information current/upcoming semester :

All registered, enrolled and confirmed participants have to take part in the first week of classes. Failure to do so without notifying the Department German as a Foreign Language will result in losing the course place and cannot take part in that semester's programme. These places are then given to people on the waiting list.

Important note about Absence :

The maximum number of teaching sessions missed per semester is 3. Each absence should be communicated to the teacher (if possible beforehand) and needs to be recorded in the Absence form. More than 3 missed teaching sessions leads not to being qualified to receive a Certificate of Attendance / ECTS credit points. If you decide to cancel participation in your course, please inform the German as a Foreign Language Department. You are allowed to reapply for the course next semester.
